“The lodger”, phyllis tate - listen on wdr3

The recording of Phyllis Tate’s opera The Lodger, performed by the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yorgos Ziavras, is now available online via WDR3 for one month. Following the streaming period, the recording will be released on CD and made available on all major streaming platforms.

Murderers have long populated the operatic stage. Yet a serial killer such as Jack the Ripper — haunting the fog-filled streets of Victorian London and murdering prostitutes — remains an unusual operatic figure.

What may sound like a bloody thriller is shaped by British composer Phyllis Tate with remarkable subtlety. Based on the 1913 novel by Marie Belloc Lowndes, the opera unfolds in an atmosphere of psychological tension, musical nuance, and richly coloured orchestration.
