Yorgos Ziavras has received two nominations in Opernwelt’s 2025/26 annual critics’ survey, recognising his work at Oper Wuppertal across repertoire ranging from Antonio Vivaldi to the rediscovery of Phyllis Tate’s The Lodger.
Music critic Richard Lorber nominated Ziavras in the category Upcoming Artist, highlighting the breadth and versatility of his work:
“The young Wuppertal conductor Yorgos Ziavras is equally at home in avant-garde and early music, and was also the conductor of the rediscovery of Phyllis Tate’s opera The Lodger.”
The nomination also draws attention to Ziavras’s work on the rediscovery of British composer Phyllis Tate’s opera The Lodger. The work was recorded under his musical direction for WDR 3, bringing renewed attention to Tate’s rarely performed opera.
Ziavras also received a nomination from critic Stephan Keim for his PERFORMANCE of Antonio Vivaldi’s La Griselda at Oper Wuppertal. Keim nominated the production in three categories: Ziavras’s music direction, the stage direction by Matilda Tilleuil McNichol, and the costume design by Noemi Daboczi.
The nominations highlight two contrasting projects from Ziavras’s 2025/26 season at Oper Wuppertal: the historically informed interpretation of Vivaldi’s La Griselda and the rediscovery and recording of Tate’s The Lodger.
